Choosing a puppy is an exciting decision, but it is also a major commitment. Taking time to find a responsible breeder – or considering adopting a rescue dog – can help protect both dogs and puppies from poor breeding practices.

If buying from a breeder, prospective owners should be able to see the puppy with their mother in the place where they were born and raised. Be wary of anyone who wants to meet somewhere else, won't let you see the puppy's living environment or puts pressure on you to make a quick decision.

Never be afraid to walk away if something doesn't seem right. Concerns about the welfare of animals should be reported through the appropriate RSPCA channels.
